Today I received my new CPU and was I surprised!.
Why you might ask?, because I ordered this model ADA4000DAA5BN and instead received the ADA4000DKA5CF which is still an AMD64 4000+ but based on the newer Toledo duel core but obliviously with only one core working.

The default clock for this CPU model is 2400MHz, ive cranked it up 3Ghz and it's fully stable, I've been testing it by playing NWN2 which tax's any CPU pretty heavily... 4 hours straight and no problems.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Athlon_64_microprocessors

I'm also now running 2gig of ram :D being as it's so damn cheap! and a few weeks ago brought myself a Creative X-Fi Music soundcard.

i was thinking, is one 1GB (RAM) enough ?

That depends on the use of the system in question.
Things such as the OS and hardware have their own 'expectations' on the system.

For everyday office use, 512Mb is more than enough. However gaming with most recent gfx cards, sound cards etc does require 1gb+... the more the better as it is with both sides (office & gaming).

As a general thumb when advising clients, I always suggest a min of 1gb.

Brand name DDR400 is dirt cheap right now... buy has much as your system will take.

I'd be a bit carefull with that development you've got going there. Mainly because the ram wont fit the motherboard. That motherboard can only hold 800MHz ram and you've got 1066MHz there, so thats a no no. Also i really wouldn't recommend getting an 8800GTX for now, the GeForce 9 series is planned to be released by the end of 2007 so i'm getting a pretty nice, but not ridiculously expensive 8800, and then upgrade to the 9 series, which will allegidly be 2x the power.

In fact, why are you upgrading lol. I'm only upgrading because my old computer is running a P4 2.5GHz, 256 ram and 64mb of inbuilt graphics.

Tim

Here are my specs for my PC on my Xfire page http://www.xfire.com/profile/tcloser/

I'm thinking about upgrading my PCs Graphic card to a 512MB Saphire, that will also require me to upgarde my Power Supply as well, and also thinking about getting a backup hard drive as I only have 94GBs left from about 220GBs :p

Any suggestions on what video card, or power supply I should look into getting? Also I will also be looking into maxing out my RAM to 4GBs on my MB, which is 3GBs, but less then that atm, due to my on board 128MB Graphics.

BTW: Nice Monitor, & Keyboard you have there :)

Ian
02-08-07, 01:20 PM
Thanks, if I where you i'd leave it for now, as Nvidia have said they are releasing a new GeForce 9 range by 2008, and its very soon as they are expected in the summer, so save your cash peronally and get one of those.

Also i personally don't see the point in upgrading your ram as the max amount i've seen a game need is 1.5GB. Save your cash and flow it into a solid Power Supply and Graphics Card. Me personally? I'm more of a Processor man, its the heart to all the functioning on the computer.

it works fine with1066ghz mate .. i saw doing the test in tv..!!!!!.......about the G9 series???!!!....if you got 2x g8800 ultra u dont need for now G9 series...cause the motherboard support up to 3 graphic cards and nvidia is doing the work for 3 sLi (probbaly at th end of 2007 is finish)...thanx anyway mate ;)

@deblack:
You won the lottery or something? :D Even a single 8800 Ultra can handle every possible game available at highest settings. A SLI setup for such cards is complete overkill at this point. Personally I'd wait untill their prices drop and then add a second one. Same with 8GB memory, you simply do not need that much. 4GB will do for any application and game. Not to mention you'll need to get a 64bit OS as well.
And why the Striker Extreme? It's a very expensive board, which is reported to have serious overheating problems, and it's performance isn't any better then most other (less expensive) mobo's.
But hey, it's your money. :)

Mobo: Asrock 4Coredual

OS: Win XP Pro (also have Vista Ultimate, but I switched back to XP)

I can imagine why. There are loads of software/games that won't work on Vista. Even not when using the compability mode. BTW: that did a fine job within Win XP though.
And did I mention the slow preformance of Vista comparing to XP? Even when you have the finest hardware kit in the world, Vista knocks it right down and you will think you have a X386 processor built in

Well, I don't really want to wait until 2008 to upgrade to a good video card, I was thinking about getting a good 256MB Card that has Directx 10 on it, that's what a friend suggested.

And I upgraded my RAM some, and I have noticed it loads faster now, not much faster, but it doesn't slow as much if I have a lot of windows open :)

Yeah, indeed. XP is so much faster then Vista. I like the design, features and idea of Vista though.
Once more DX10 games are released, I'll probably install Vista again.

@deblack, sure, just send me a pm if you need anything.
Btw, adding memory just for the heck of it doesn't speed up your pc. If your system only uses 2GB then adding another 2GB won't make a difference. Plus, remember you will need the 64bit version of the OS, the standard 32bit only accepts 3,5GB.
And what I ment with those 2 videocards was that it's a waste of money at the moment. A Single 8800Ultra can run everything at highest settings. Only add that second card when the single one can't run it anymore on it's own. By the time that will happen we're probably a year further, and the price will have dropped a lot.

Hey tc..3 pc screens!! thats make a lot of difference tc...when your playing a game like flight 10 of microsoft games its good to have 3 pc screens..makes bigger but poor quality...for watching movies!!! duno i prefer a LCD HD TV because in 3 pc screens you have lines between thems :s..so you can lose some of the action

I'm still using my 2005 build PC, however it wont be changed untill it struggles and it certainly doesn't. - yet :p

Intel Pentium 4 HyperThreading, EMT64 - 3,2 GHz. (I'm not an overclocker)
2560 MB DDR2 RAM in Dual Channel symmetrical setup.
ASUS 8600 GT 512 MB DDR3 ram (Read thread : "My video card is hotter than yours" :p )
ASUS P5B Deluxe motherboard
2x160GB Western Digital 7200RPM harddrives running RAID mirrored
19" TFT
Logitech Whatever mouse
Aluminium keyboard from CM Gears that occasionally electricutes me.
XP SP2 because Vista will never touch this machine :p

For speakers I either use my 2.1 PC speaker system, or move my lazy behind to my home cinema and use the 32" screen as monitor and the 7.1 surround as speakers. Yay! :D

I'm considering upgrading the entire system at some point, but I wont really do much about it yet, as it still fills recommended specs on most new games.

Nice system there Logan... :p

No, that would be known as "Grayscale". :p

It's the most basic colours, like blue, light blue, green, light green, black, white, grey, red, violet, purple, orange, etc... And of course, it wasn't 8 colours - but 16. :p My mistake.

On some older computers running Windows 98 or past, you can sometimes, if the graphic card supports it, select 16 colours, to see how that looks :D

Manufacturer: MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM

It sounds like a very well balanced system too :)

Often you see a good processor, a lot of ram, but then slow harddrives, or bad graphic cards. That's sad cause people spend so much money on something that's worse than a computer they could have gotten cheaper.

Graphics card: ATI Radeon 2400 HD 256 MB Memory

Mike
17-07-08, 07:06 AM
Well mine is shameful because I cant figure out whats the deal with my desktop which does play SWAT4 excellently until it crashed.........
I'll list both my laptop (which im unfortunitly cursed to use to play SWAT4 with) and desktop

Laptop:
AMD 1.8 GHz processor
~1 GB RAM
64 GB HD
316 MB Video Card (Radeon 1150)
Windows Vista (does interfere a lot, probably causes some of my lag. Does have its benefits as well though)

Desktop:
2.6 GHz processor (says I have 2 CPUs but I only have one, perhaps this plays into my issues :/)
~2 GB RAM
200 GB HD
(too lazy to turn on and check) Either 256 or (probably) 512 MB Video card (Radeon 9600)
Windows XP Pro
Crashes shortly after attemping to play SWAT4, states I need to run a RAM test. Probably be best just to buy more ram and replace that as well since I have already replaced the video card and HDD to elimante those possible issues. Guess RAM is next to replace :/. ATM its good for running my radio show and being on live support while I game on my laptop hehe.

btw watch out that the current ram don't leak over ure motherboard

Yup, Mr Blobby is correct. :)

However, "odd numbers" in graphic memory - especially on laptop or low budget PCs - may derive from a rather small graphic card using some of the system RAM. This can pretty much generate any possible number. :)

Other than that, the sizes are the same as internet speeds, as it all derrives on binary numbers.

1 - 2 - 4 - 8 - 16 - 32 - 64 - 128 - 256 - (384) - 512 - (768) - 1024 - 2048 - 4096 - etc

The numbers in brackets ( ) indicate odd sizes, that can be made physically, i.e. by combining two values that are not of the same size ( 128 + 256 = 384 ) ( 256 + 512 = 768). These aren't used very often though. The rest of the numbers are true binary values. :)

So here are my actual pensioner-pc specs:

AMD Athlon XP2200+ (1,8 Ghz)

Creative 5.1 Surround System
Razer Copperhead

This system should also be a great grill for next summer ;)

I thought I have had posted my pc description somewhere but I didn't find it.
So I write it there :D

Manufacturer : TerminatorFR group :D
Processor : Intel Core2Quad Q6600 2.4GHz o/c at 3.0GHz
Ram : 4 X 1GB DDR2 1066MHz Kingston
MotherBoard : Asus P5K-Wifi
Power suply : Heden 560W 2 fans
Hard Drive : 2 X 250GB Maxtor Sata in RAID0 (Strip size: 32KB) 2 times faster than a single HD of 500GB (measured it at 60MB/s instead of 30MB/s with a single one, when I start my comp, just after the logo windows, the desktop appears, It doesn't have the time to write welcome)
Graphic : Vvikoo Nvidia Geforce 8800GT 512MB
Drives : Floppy ; LG DVD-ROM ; Philips DVD-RW
OS : Windows Vista Home Premium 32bits
CPU cooler : Zaward Vivo, I recommend it to you, it's a really effective silent cooler.
with full load non overclocked, I got lesser than 45 degrees celcius.
at 3.0GHz full load : less than 55 and at 3.4GHz less than 60.

With all those things, I reach the maximum coefficient of performance in vista : 5,9. :D
http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/3279/59lg9.jpg

2 views of the inside of my comp : (I know, it's a bit horrible with all those wires but I can't do it else, the biggest problem is the IDE cable with is going from bottom of the MB to the DVD-RW drive at the top of the tower :D)

We can easily see the entry of the homemade cooler (I know, it's a bit dusty )

My homemade cooler with an old cd drive and 2 fans of 80mm, they are taking the fresh air from the front of the comp and blowing it in (gives a lot of fresh air directly to the CPU):

You can easily do something about the wires mate ;)

cable ties, CableEater, a cable duct, plenty of options for either keeping the cables concealed, or just bundled up. And you really should do it, cause it affect the airflow of the case ALOT.

Really nice PC though! :) I like the home made cooler thingy :D

The best cd drives for making that cooler are the old ones because of their size, they are longer than the newest so there is enough place for placing 2 fans in it. I got it from a dump like the fans too. :D
And I got such a lot of wires because of my 3 hard drives that I have in it.

I must just say that my old comp from 2004 died 4 months ago. Motherboard got a breakdown and I needed a new comp. So I took something which is enough powerful. ;)

My old one was:

MB: MSI 865PE Neo2-P
Proc: Intel P4 hyper threading 3.0GHz socket 478
Ram: 2 X 512MB DDR 400MHz
Graphic: Pixelview Nvidia FX5700 256MB DDR
HD: 160 GB IDE
OS: Windows XP home

It was a good machine, It really anoyed me when it happened.
I simply tryed to plug an usb cabble but it wasn't plugged, It happened just before it was in it and the screen froze, mouse didn't react and the HD activity lamp was off.
So I made reset and I tryed to cut of the electricity and restart it but nothing worked. (clearing the bios too)
The computer was running (fans, lamps...) but the screen was black and the bios didn't worked because there wasn't any beep.

DDR3's been out for some time, I think they've even released GDDR5 RAM for graphics cards.

TerminatorFR

True, DDR3 is out but it's not as powerful as DDR2 at the time. I say, the best for the moment is DDR2 1066MHz. ;)

yea i agree on that the DDR2 is much better at the moment compared the the DD3, im sure in due time they will make DD3 that's going to be significantly better that the 1066MHz DDR2 :)

Since my graphics card died yesterday, I bought a new one today (and some accesoires). So here's a little change:

Manufacturer: MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
Hard Drive: Seagate 400 GB
Video Card: E.V.G.A. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 896 MB DDR3 (http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/2705/watermarkzd3.jpg)
Monitor: Philips 190X6 (19inch LCD MONITOR 190X6)
Sound Card: Realtek AC97 Audio
Keyboard: HAMA Wired Keyboard
Mouse: LOGITECH Wired Mouse
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition

No more wireless, hooray! Changing batteries got on my nerves by now. -.-

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I also own a new 450V power generator since the salesman for the graphic card recommended to buy one as well - and he was right, my old generator produced way too little power which means the system would've been screwed.

Yea indeed, clan sponsoring is a big thing since CS got popular in leagues ^^ And i think it's one of the best marketing strategies for brands like Logitech, Revoltec, etc. etc... because they make you think if you play with this mouse or that keyboard, you can get as pro as the clan advertising it :D I know that, because only a few years ago, when i played CS pretty seriously it was the same thing for me ^^ When the Pros use it, it must be good :p Well... maybe true somehow, but you can have the best mouse, monitor, PC, mousepad, keyboard, headset, etc... without having skill and training all day you already have lost xD I gave up CS after 4-5years because i had enough of "having to play everyday" :p

Oh... and to write something about topic:

CAL-I is a invite only League, not 1 singlular "clan". Yes there are some VERY good teams getting paid sponsorship money to play at Tourneys, mainly at LAN tournaments in the States but it is getting more popular in Europe. One of the best players in the world is actually from Poland i believe. ;)

Nice spec on the PC.

Ive now ditched PCs. I use a laptop and will most likely upgrade to a newer model in the next few years as the spec I have now is sufficient for virtually all games.

I switched due to the portable nature along with a HUGE reduction in my electricity bill! :lol2:

Since alot are talking about upgrades, I figured I'd pitch in with a warm recommandation. I bought this system January, 2009 (see page 16), and it's still on top of it's game.

Especially the memory architecture which no longer routes via the chipset but rather directly to the CPU and is trippelchannel DDR3 RAM is a huuge improvement, as well as the CPU itself being blatantly excessive and aw'sum.

It's also alot more reasonable in price, and even the small Core i7 is very efficient since it has HyperThreading on each core, meaning your OS sees 8 CPUs to work with. ;)

Motherboard : ASUS P6T Deluxe
CPU : Intel Core i7 920 (QuadCore with HyperThreading)
RAM : 6GB DDR3 Trippel Channel RAM

So the above got my personal recommandation if you need a good system that is ready for the future. :)

Just for laughs :

Crysis :
http://d3pjvfidpfofxp.cloudfront.net/assets/images/graphs/mp_rp_7.gif
Grand Theft Auto 4 :

Resident Evil 5 :

I don't get a new system that often. I think the last one that I built was back in 2005. So this new setup will last me a couple of years. I don't even try to keep up with technology (too bloody expensive). And besides I have more important things to spend my money on :) - like paintball gear.

Why would he? XP works perfectly stable for me, not to mention it has very good compatibility with older games. While 7 may be new and fancy i see no reason to change OS so soon after its come out. Once software makers start making software for win7 as primary platform, and XP is not fully supported, than i think the change of OS is wise.

Luckily, not all people agree with me:cool:

Native DirectX support, new technology, supports bigger harddrives and 3+ GB RAM.

I have 6GB RAM, and switching to Vista was nessacary for me to use my RAM. That being said, Vista in my opinion works fine and I can't complain about it after I've tweaked it, but my PC (previous pages) scores 5,9/6 in the Vista Experience Index. That being said, I'd much rather have skipped straight to Win7 of course, but that wasn't an option and I ain't gonna upgrade yet. But from XP => Vista / 7 is a big step, especially in terms like security, device managing (I hardly ever need a driver CD for Vista), etc.

I was very much against Vista initially, but after SP1 it improved alot, and I think it has a bad reputation in part because it needs a faster PC, which most people at the time of the launch simply didn't have. In addition, the initial release was severely faulted. I'll not be buying any Microsoft product that isn't Service Pack 1 or higher in the future, that's for sure :)

how old and its good but could be better if you look a few pages back look at my system also completely self assembled it works realy nice why not switching over to win 7 ultimate?

I assembled it at least one year ago.
Its not a pc of last generation but works fine for me.

I got 7 ultimate but Im worried becouse there are no Win 7 compatible drivers for my router.

Im worried becouse there are no Win 7 compatible drivers for my router.
that's probably because your router doesn't run windows 7, nor any OS, it runs firmware. :)

A firmware upgrade will solve driver problem but router is not mine, its of telephone company. And a part of that, upgrading it i will lose other functionalities (out of PC) like home TV with I actually pay.

Why should a router be the issue?
I assume that your router is connect through ethernet cables?
Or is is through USB?
If it is through ethernet it should be no problem. If it is through USB, I would advise to contact your ISP to get a new router.

Ehmmm, Win 7 supports XP compability. At least you have to have Win 7 pro or ultimate to have this feature. I run older games without any problems. Even older programs work good if I use the Virtual XP which is build in Win 7.

It has both connectors. I use the Ethernet.
Yes, I made a mistake and most probably It will run.

Ik worried about other programs and drivers.

Don't worry, Windows 7 will run smoothly on your PC, I'm sure. You only have to update firmware for all device for which a new one is avaible to improve compatibility and stability with Seven.

No problems, Windows 7 has a large driver support so if it hasn't native driver you can try the Windows Vista one or the older XP driver (if you're lucky it should work well).

I haz input udate!

Manufacturer: INTEL
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
Memory: 4028MB RAM
Hard Drive: 1 TB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 896MB DDR

Sound Card: Realtek AC97 Audio

Mouse: Logitech Gaming Mouse G500 (pic (http://www.anarchie08.de/inc/tinymce_files/logitech_gaming_mouse_g500.jpg))
Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium

I don't know if I'm going to use the weights for the mouse very much. I loaded all the heavy ones since it now feels more like my old one. :) I like the grip and the overall design, the rest is just gimmick I probably won't use (f.e. all the keys of the mouse are reprogramable).

The keyboard is 100% nerdy I tell you! :D

12 macro keys which can hold up to three different key combinations (that's 3x12 macros per game, since the software saves macros for each game!), programable by software or directly ingame.
Every single key is illuminated depending on which of the three macro sets is loaded (colors can be customized too)
It has its own "Deactivate Windows key" so you can't be interrupted ingame if you hit one of the Windows keys by accident

Moneyspendingcat feelz laik pro nao! And if my brother didn't stop me, I would own an Xbox360 now as well. XD

Nice PC, but it's impossible that you have a Socket775 motherboard with a legacy AC'97 audio codec: it must be surely an Azalia compliant HDA codec, I'm pretty sure.

Except for keyboard, mouse and monitor, I let Xfire check on my system. If it says so, it either is like that or Xfire didn't recognize it correctly.

But you know what? I don't care! I have illuminated keys now! Screw sound as long as I hear some, I'm all crazy about my new stuff! :P

Lol, but to be honest, a good sound is part of intense gaming experience, imho. Glad to see you're happy with your new Logitech G series keyboard and mouse, surely a good buy. Did you find useful combos within SWAT 4 with your keyboard or mouse?

My sound is good as I said. However, sound system will most likely be the next PC upgrade - if next upgrade isn't a complete new system.

And yes, the software actually recognized SWAT4 immediately and had some pre-settings at the ready. However, I haven't worked on the macro keys yet. I'll give that a try as soon as I got used to the keyboard itself. *erases all the typos all the time*

I doubt you have 4000 GB of RAM, you meant 4 GB of RAM.
Also, looking your old picture, I notice some particular gaming devices: it looks (also relating to your desktop) that you like flying simulators. If it's true, I would ask you to play sometime with Lock-On or the oldest but unforgotten A-10 Cuba! game.

We can't speak of "how long", but instead "how much". Really, I can say not so much, but flight simulator (the combat ones, not like MS FSX or others) is a part of my favourites games. I played Ace Combat (3 and 4), A-10 Cuba!, Falcon 4.0, Lock-On and Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. (maybe I miss somewhat).

Lol, your so true, 4gb it is. Of course we can play some Lock-On! I bought that game couple of years ago and I think it's one of the greatest combat simulator there is beside Falcon. I need to install it again though but you can add me on Xfire or msn so we can arrange something! :D

That thing had its own "fast access"-harddrive for the OS so that the PC starts up with the speed of lightning, as well as a 1,5GB graphics card. XD And I kinda liked that thingy, but it sure was expensive.

Now I think you guys better ask Eico when he's gonna start his rocket to the moon. Pretty good hardware! ^^
