I have played Battlefield 1942 for a long time with my brothers via LAN, it was fun against bots. When it was released, I downloaded the demo of Battlefield 2142 which was quite cool too. I like the Titan-mode and the possibility of creating squads and working together. Only one of my brothers played the demo via the internet with me though. T.T

Two or three days ago I finally downloaded the demo of Battlefield 2. It's actually the same like 2142 talking about the gameplay, but I recognized that I died more recently (sometimes like five times in a row immediately) and that people can't live without helicopters and airplanes since they're always using them. Destroying aircraft is something I wasn't very successful so far. Using these anti-air-rocket systems at flag points won't work for me, and using a machinegun does too little damage. Jesus Christ Allmighty, I shot down helicopters and even a plane with the main gun of a tank more recently than with the two things mentioned above.

Anyway, the game seems pretty funny and I wonder if I should buy the game together with the four booster packs. But before I do that I have several questions and would like to ask you "battlefield professionals" to answer them as good as you can:

Is there a "co-op" mode where you can play via KI-controlled players?
Are most players focused on using helicopters and airplanes to kill the enemy and is it - after released patches (?) - still tough to shoot these down? (I really hate those aircraft >.<)
Do players take their roles serious when being commander or squad leader? I'm always waiting for my squad leader to tell me where to go, but I rarely receive an answer.
Just a general question: What do you think about the maps? Are they realistic, do they offer enough possibility to take cover? Are they "fun"?

Hmm I had some more questions, but I somehow forgot them. I'll ask them when I remember.

Well Asa, i'l say that there was a thread called BF2 vs. BF2142 and guess what evryone said BF2 ,bf2 etc...Spec even said(as i well remember) "Bf2142 is a mod for bf2" XD and my opinion is the same actually, bf2 RULLZZZZ.As bf2142 well not so mutch, 1 more new mode, and in the both bf games there isn't any good co-op mode.
Actually it's like 2 players in a map and the players are just shooting at BOTS!!!!
Maps are cool but in bf2142 MAN YOU WILL GET SICK OF SNOW AND COLD..aaa bf2 is still 'da winna in maps xD ;)

Asa ......... Some squad leaders do take it seriously ....... most commanders(if there is one) are good and sending UAVs etc........ to you if you request it.

From my experience so far, most players are for them selves sometimes, even when in a squad. I usually pick a squad and play, and try to follow commands if given the chance.

I think that most players, if there is a vehicle or aircraft, will use them to their advantage. Some players(Like me :p) just fly around and try to shoot the enemy to no avail. lol

About the maps, I like most of them, but it's hard to find a server that doesn't play certain ones OVER, & OVER again. :(

I would say you should get it, then when/if SOG gets a BF2 Server we can go to a "Crazy" free server.... I know that is funny huh!

Asa - if you buy BF2, download Project Reality, its worth the 2 GB download. Just ask Bosco - Project Reality makes a whole new game with 1000% more realism. And there aint so much aircrafts, and the most helicopters can only transport someone

First let's see if I buy the normal Battlefield 2, okay? ;)

Thanks for the info tc and thanks to OSTIN as well, but I'll wait for other posts before I make a decision. ^.^

lol That's why you have 2 feet, and able to run, also don't run in straight line :) ........ that's when you run in between things, like buildings for example. A tank can't go through a building :p

A tank can't go through a building

THAT would be nice! Just drive through some of these wooden buildings shouldnt be a problem for a tank, why isnt THAT in this game.... you cant even destroy trees <.<

Is there a "co-op" mode where you can play via KI-controlled players?

I so don't get this question because I'm stupid. So if I'm answering something else, sorry. As far as I know you can't play LAN games nor multiplayer games where you are humans vs. computer except singleplayer (it's ment to be a multiplayer game, so singleplayer isn't very fun, it's a nice training ground though).

Are most players focused on using helicopters and airplanes to kill the enemy and is it - after released patches (?) - still tough to shoot these down? (I really hate those aircraft >.<)

BF2 is seriously buildt to be a team-playing game. If one side achieves air superiority, you will be in trouble. There are maps without airplanes and helicopters in it, like Road to Jalalabad and Strike at Karkand. They are groundtroops only maps.
Also a couple of maps have transport helicopters only.
As you progress you might start liking to fly yourself, or find ways to avoid airstrikes. You are right about the stingers, they not good to take down planes, but the tank can be very effective against helicopters (not to mention snipers).

They have tweaked the anti-aircraft weapons in the patches so it's easier to shoot them down as it's harder to avoid getting hit by the missiles. They have put on stronger armour on the transport helicopter.

The level of the players, and how interested they are in airplanes depends on the server you are on. There are clan servers dedicated to piloting and there are servers who only have maps on their list where you can fly planes. You should try to find servers that are focused on team-play that takes the game a little serious. They will focus on commanders and strategic battles rather then point scoring in airoplanes.
Do players take their roles serious when being commander or squad leader? I'm always waiting for my squad leader to tell me where to go, but I rarely receive an answer.

Again, depends on the server. If it has serious players hosting it and watching over, they will kick people who don't play in squads and those who don't play to win.

If you are waiting for your squadleader to tell you where to go, but nothing happens, find a different squad or join the other team. A squad leader who doesn't communicate with the commander to give your team the advantage, is useless.

Just a general question: What do you think about the maps? Are they realistic, do they offer enough possibility to take cover? Are they "fun"?

I think BF2 can be a blast and we all have different maps that we think are the best maps according to the way we play the game. I don't think it's very realistic in the way it's set up. Then again, capture the flag gameplay isn't very realistic to begin with, is it? Being able to revive your team mates with shockpaddles and they are up and running kinda messes the realistic part up majorly.
But it can be intense, tactical gameplay with realistic features to it. The cover part is lacking a bit. Then again, that depends on your style of play. If you are the sneaky type, you are the slow type. With an effective commander on the other team, not being visable won't matter much. He will send troops your way or just get you with artillery, or tell a plane to bomb you to pieces. If you are foot soldier or a slow unit, cover matters. But not by trees and buildings (few buildings you can enter anyways), but by team-mates or your commander.

There are different maps. Some junglemaps have lots of cover, and those out in the desert have limited amounts of it. The city maps have buildings... You will eventually be forced out in the open though for flag capturing. *smiles* It's the intensity that keeps you coming back to more. And when you frequent servers, you will get friends and regular teammates that you know will do the best they can to keep you alive. *grins*

Battlefield 2 is deffinately worth it.

I haven't tried Project Reality, and I probably won't. I like the regular game as it is.

I also have Special Forces of the booster packs. But, I didn't like it at all. It didn't fit my style at all as I'm a tank whore. Narrow city streets, stupid quads, night vision, grappling hooks and zip-lines just doesn't do it for me. They are all nice gadgets, but I hate snipers that are close to impossible to take out because they are positioned on a verande 5 stories up, and the only way to get there is by ziplining off a building where he can easilly shoot your volnerable ass. No, it's more an annoyance then anything else.

The fact that I didn't like Special Forces didn't encourage me to buy the following booster packs.

Spec really is persistent if he likes something, isn't he? First Ecot, now PR. :D

Thanks for your post Trin-chan. I see your point that the teamwork depends on the server. Maybe I'm lucky and find some kind of "SOG Server" where I'll be stuck for the few hours of leisure time I have every day. =D About the online rank: It sounds motivating, but I don't think it is that important.

By the way Trin-chan, you are a tank whore? Ha I love tanks too. My favorite anti-aircraft defense. :p

Yes, I meant some kind of "player vs. AI"-mode like in Battlefield 1942. There doesn't even exist one for LAN games? Now that is a big minus. :(

whats point in playing something thats ridiculessly realistic?? we play games to take our mind off real life, to relax and have a laugh. u die, u respawn, simple as that, why care about how many bullets you can take, and all the rest of that stuff???

Actually, when you rank up you get to unlock a weapon of choice. Now that I have the more accurate and powerful weapons, I'm better. As I suck with the standard ones. *chuckles*

I love shooting down choppers with my tank. Haven't hit a plane yet, but I'll get there. When I was a newbie I shot down a friendly transport chopper, I think they banned me... *laughs*Oh well.

When I was a newbie I shot down a friendly transport chopper, I think they banned me...

I dont know anyone who hasnt done something like that in their ''newb'' days :D

About the co-op thing, I doubt there is one as the game is based on Multiplayer.

Weeell, rarely ive met squad leaders who care to give orders, just I dont mind bout it, still trying to spawn at him and stick in team.

About the Aircrafts... Yea, its easy to hit them once but getting more missiles than that to them is another story... Im total noob when it comes to aircrafts but a wizard with helis.
If you dont like.. go to infrantry only servers.

About the maps there are 3 types of sized maps. 16 player (smallest of'course) 32 and a 64 player maps. All 64 player maps are big enough to walk to otherside in 10-15 mins. Rarely you will get that far just by walking xD.

If with a good team by your side its a great way of having fun. Get the game.

Infantry only sucks! I only play big maps, so I'm not interested in walking around in the wilderness for 15 minutes without anything happening. I need cars! And tanks! And and and... Pfffff. Infantry only my ass.

Well I love being infantry. I mostly use the "Support"-layout, so I get some cover and send a curtain of bullets to my enemies. But I won't say "No" to a car or a tank either. ;)

Thanks for the link frufer. ^^
