- What you currently do?

Well i recently change my job, to start work for my uncles carpet factory outlet, to become a salesman/stock controller. I have been tasked with bringing his business into the 20h century, as currently everything is on paper or someone's head. So i have to create a stock system, a point of sale, a website and maintain/train staff on the use and functions of the computer tech we have as well as improving the equipment to meet our needs, all the while still maintaining the salesman's position and achieving sales for the company.

- If you like it?

As you may imagine with all the tasks i have been tasked with it is a varied and challenging ask for some1, but i do enjoy the job, altho it can get boring at times if the store is empty and being out on an industrial estate, not much options for getting away at lunch etc. But the fact that its family can help as it means my boss and the other staff are friendly and flexible :D

- If you will pursue it?

Well my uncle is looking to expand his business with the opening of another store in a town not far form us and i would love to be involved in the set-up of it so i can get it running the way it should and show how the systems im currently trying to implement in the existing store would not only improve efficiency but help make the business more profitable. So i would say if he offered me the managers job i would take it in a heartbeat, but secretly im hoping for higher. like area manager lol

- What company you work for?

Carpets Direct www.carpets-direct.org.uk (work in progress btw)

- What is the nature of business?

we supply and fit all types of flooring such as laminate, carpet, karndean and rugs etc

- Discuss your previous jobs?

Well as some of yous know i have been in the public service all my life with my parents owning a hotel and bar i kind of fell into the trade. i worked behind and managed bars for some 10 years before i got fed up and moved to sales. i worked in telephone sales of insurance which i did enjoy believe it or not even tho you got the odd call now and again with abusive customers, but my solution generally was to arrange like 25 call backs :P after burning out in the tele-sales i moved on to become a second-hand goods salesman and pawnbroker, which being a bit of a gadget freak suited me down to the ground as you got to play with hundreds of different gadgets and stuff every day, and it was very varied. for instance 1 customer could have a kettle the next a gold bullion coin then a ps3. i learned a lot in this job and my only regret is that my employer didnt respect his employees any which in the end forced me to leave and move to the job im currently doin.

Well i think thats about it.

Cool topic, it's interesting to hear more about that side of each other. :) And I'm happy Xmarks isnt employed at my insurance agency although I'd never be abusive to anyone in the first place :D

This is gonna be insanely long, so I've used quote for the chapters so you can easily tell which is which. Don't feel obligated to read everything guys. :D

My current situation

Currently I'm an apprentice in the trade of electrician. I'm employed in a rather large company, although it's shrunken alot since the financial hysteria started. Thus we are approximately 30 people, compared to 50 in 2008.

Being an apprentice is not usually the most fun - you're often tasked with some rather poor jobs like "dig a hole", "drill holes in this wall", "run these cables through the building", and usually you're taken off the job when the fun part, like assembly, programming or whatever then begins. Not in my case though - as it happened, the company I work for sent out an analysis in the early stages of my apprenticeship where the goal was to rate the various areas of the company on how much you liked working with these areas. You could also write suggestions for improvements, personal wishes, etc.

Alot of my coworkers kinda whimped out on it, they moan every day, but they didn't want to put it in writing or alternatively they handed it in anonymously. I summoned the courage to write my honest opinion being that I pretty much disliked everything because apprentices were pulled away from the job just as it got interesting, and that I would be very happy to see a change in this. I also rated the tasks and such. Got a call from my boss the next morning, shruk and answered, and much to my amazement he didnt yell at me, he praised me for delivering good and usable feedback.

About a year passed by where I didn't see very much change in the tasks though, but then one day, the boss approached me about a new line of education that has appeared under the electrician education : Building Automation, an education where you specialize in the Building Management Systems (BMS), being things like access control, alarm, intelligent lighting installations, HVAC, etc and especially the art of combining all these things.

I took about 2 weeks to carefull check it out and see if there were any drawbacks, and it turned out to be nothing but gain. The market is moving more and more towards intelligent solutions, be it in ordinary homes or industry. So I grabbed the chance, and when I've looked back since, I've only been happy about it. I was seriously wondering if this electrician thing wasn't a bit too... I wouldn't say basic but something along those lines. This however really suits me, I love pioneering, I love coming up with a solution that just works 110%, and I love that no matter what people ask me to do, I can say "Sure, no problem".

Just now, I'm on my way to my final stage of schooling, where we will be learning how to integrate all these systems with eachother to make one user interface (e.g. a touch screen) that can control everything.

When I come back from that, I will be an electrician, which means doing the same as I've been doing for 2 years now, but getting more money from it. I've been undertaking the most complex issues and challenges in the company, in terms of work for a while, so it only means that I'll be paid more appropriately.

If I like it

I'm a very personal and involved individual. I can be at work 16 hours a day and still have a big smile on my face, if I like my work, my coworkers and my workplace. Sadly, my current workplace doesnt always manage to live up to that, with some coworkers being quite the -removed-, and the boss sometimes getting a brain freeze of some sort.

When these things doesn't happen though, which they mostly dont, I enjoy being respected at my work, for the work I do. I also enjoy some privelledges that not many apprentices do. I also feel good knowing that I'm heard - my boss often asks me a question if he doesnt know himself. I like to take pride in my work being bulletproof and fast, so when people ask me for something, usually being information, they have it within minutes and they never have unanswered questions.

So the two paragraphs give quite the mixed impression? That's because that's how it is. On good days, I'll go to work feeling great and I LOVE it, but when someone else causes a bad day for me, I dont like it. :)

Will I persue it?

Yes. My intentions aren't perfectly clear at the moment, but I have some ideas that I will be developing within these next few months. My plan is to open my own company doing what I like to do and hopefully seeing it expand into a company large enough for me to employ one or two of my best friends and colluages - providing that it becomes the success I hope it will. It's very new, so noone is to say, really.

I also have some other sketches on the board, one being an almost automated moneymaking scheme, if I can get companies interested in a great idea I have. :D

I've already, despite only being an apprentice, been heavily involved with projecting and designing entire systems and entire buildings, so I feel pretty capable for most tasks. :)

What company do I work for?

I ask that very same question on the bad days. :p Generally though, I work in a good company where the policy is that the boss' door is always open, and the boss and leaders are very involved. Sadly they're not always and not all able to fullfill this policy, 300 days of the year it's good though :)

We maintain jobs ranging from the occasional old lady who cant replace a lightbulb and on to 4500sq.m. of office complex with intelligent lighting, heating and ventilation, airconditioning and much more. Projects range from 1 man jobs to a crew of 30. :)

What is the nature of business?

That's the cool thing about this trade ; everything. :D Replacing bulbs or prototyping the future. :)

Discuss your previous jobs?

I've had some jobs in the same line of business before, where the company has went bankrupt or I've had some broken promises. Been there, done that - but none of these companies are worth the time to mention them.

I hope this gave you an insight into what I do for a living. :)

- What you currently do?
I work as a webprogrammer during the day and secret ninja with world domination aspects at night. *laughs* It's a simple enough gig. I code ASPx and supply HTML/CSS for show :P Ohh yeah, my favorite part (irony) is contact with the clients. The oh-so-smart people who think they know everything about web and especially the perfect color-combinations that go together... *laughs*

- If you like it?
At one time in my life it was my dream job, but now that I actually _do_ it, it's not so fancy. I do like programming tho so it is up my alley.

- If you will persue it?
For now. If I find something more interesting in life, I'll change professions in a heart-beat. I miss having programming as a hobby rather then work.

- What company you work for?
A small-ish company located in Trondheim, Norway, called InCreo Interactive Creations (http://www.increo.no/). The people I work with are cool enough so that makes it more enjoyable.

- What is the nature of business?
Well.. the internet i suppose.

- Discuss your previous jobs?
I previously worked in developing software for a rel-estate business. Before that I ran my own business, which I still have on the side, it's just not active at the moment.

- What you currently do?

I'm the second-in-charge of a convenience store. Our team consists of the manager, the deputy manager (me), the deputy-deputy manager (my very personal maid who prepares breakfast for me :p) and two cashiers (my slaves :P). Since cut short on personnel, everyone has to do a load of things and so must be able to handle several assignments at once, may it be baking bread, sorting out bad fruits, refilling stocks, presenting new wares nicely, cleaning up the store and so on.
However, in a leader position, I still have alot to do, but more the "thinking" than the "carrying". I still have to fill up stocks and so on, but my main priority is to keep business rolling, assign work to the employees, do and re-check stock-taking, order all the wares and tons of other things.

- If you like it?

On the one hand, our team acts quite "family"-like with each other, like joking around or giving someone a short extra-break once in a while.
On the other hand, the manager turned into a real lazy-a** since beginning of 2009, leaving almost all the real hard and important work to me. Since me and the rest of our team knows, we talked to his boss a few times already, and most likely next week, there will be a discussion with the area manager and our team where we will confront him with his lazyness. My boss might be fired, which would put me into his position, erasing all the annoying loads of work I have to deal with usually.
Long story short: It's not my job of choice, and my boss is a sting in my backside, but without him my job would be more enjoyable.

- If you will persue it?

That depends right now. Since I'm fed up with my boss, I actually decided to quit two weeks ago, but then I heard about the upcoming discussion and the possibility to become the manager myself. Since I would be the company's youngest store manager and the salary is quite nice, I look forward to it - even if the position means I take full responsibility of my team and the store.
As a "plan B", I might focus on my education. I didn't finish the usual end exams of school when I was 18, so I might catch up on that.
Back in 2009, there was also the possibility to become an editor for a videogame magazine. The chairman of the magazine managers is a friend of my mother, so I was offered to first write voluntarily (actually for a small amount of money for each article, but small after all) and then eventually be promoted to a "full" editor. I abandoned that plan though.

- What is the nature of business?

Squeeze out the money of hard-working people for food and drinks so that they may live longer to work even harder the next day!! Mwuahahaha, we are such an evil business! :D
No seriously, it's all about presentation of wares and selling them while trying to keep food spoilage (fruit and vegetables, meat, bread) as low as possible. This asks for regular and accurate stock-taking and accurate orders of wares.

- Discuss your previous jobs?

Before taking the job as a cashier (for one month, after that deputy-manager right away), I worked at a home for the elderly, most of them with health problems like MS or Alzheimer. I only did it for less than a year though.

-So, what do YOU do?
At the moment i do nothing but search a new job, and i do hope i get it soon so i can play swat with you all again ...

That would be great to game w/you again Wes :D

- What you currently do?
Currently I work for a private security company. I work at various places as needed, I do normally work at one spot most to all of the time though. I have night shifts 1800-0600 for most of my shifts with 1-2 days off. Me (http://www.sog-team.com/forum/album.php?albumid=1&pictureid=452) in current jobs uniform.

- If you like it?
I do enjoy the company and co-workers, but its not what I would like to do for the rest of my life. Its a very good job to start off those that are looking for a law enforcemnt career.

- What company you work for?
The company is called Securitas (http://www.securitas.com/en/About-Securitas/Our-History/). It was originally named Pinkerton and started in Sweden I believe and migrated to the US. Its a pretty big security company and has the advantage of being able to transfer to another part of the country and even to another country all together.

- What is the nature of business?
Typical and not so typical security work. Typical, monitoring alarms and cameras, access control, patrols, tickets, reports. Not typical (that I do mainly), inventory control for items needed by the technicians at the client Im currently assigned to. Occasionally when a call out occurs also have to do receiving during the day (I prefer that job). When doing receiving I must take in packages from the various companys that get deliverd to the client that the client orders from and bring them to their proper locations. Its also a shorter shift 8 hours vs 12 that I typically do for the other job.

- Discuss your previous jobs?
Story time, at 14 yrs old I started working (Fun Foods outfit (http://www.sog-team.com/forum/album.php?albumid=2&pictureid=6) it was like my last summer I worked there so I was like 17 or 18. I would have started working earlier but in the US you must be at least 14 to legally work) at a local amusement park for the food company called Fun Foods Inc. (I know lame name). Since Im in a cold state the park was only open from late May to early September. There I worked 5 summers for them and got some nice raises but no promotions that were promised summer after summer.

When I was 16 (minimum age for most typical high school/early college jobs) I started working as many hours as I legally could for Wendys during the winter so from Sept. to May. Back at my winter job (no pics of me in that unifrom as I burend them :p j/k), they promised me a raise for the whole 2 yrs I worked there (minus when I was at my summer job).

So when I was 18 naturally I started to work for the college security (http://www.sog-team.com/forum/album.php?albumid=2&pictureid=7) and quit Wendys. I didnt do so well into the second half of the year in college (college normally runs from August to December, then January to May) so at the end of my first year I had to stop going and I could only be security at the college while I took classes. So after that year I due to the no promised promotions for my summer job when I was 19 (18 is the minimum age in the US to do security work) I switched to the park's security. It was pretty darn close to being an actual cop (no gun, did wear cuffs though hehe). If it was a year round job I totatlly would have kept it till I get to where I want to be. In my amusement park security uniform (http://www.sog-team.com/forum/album.php?albumid=2&pictureid=9) there Im 20 and yes made sergeant hehe.

At then end of the summer I luckily got a security job (http://www.sog-team.com/forum/album.php?albumid=2&pictureid=8) at one of the largest hospitals in the state at 19. So that was probably the best security I job I have had (and best paid hehe). I did that for a year, part way through the year I went from 2nd shift (1600-2400) to 3rd shift (0000-0800). At the summer time I made a silly and stupid decision to leave the hospital job and return to the amusement park security job (still dont know why I did it to this day :().

After that summer I got a new seucity job for a private security company called FPS (http://www.sog-team.com/forum/album.php?albumid=2&pictureid=10) a local company to my state. I did that for half a year (at 20) start in September and due to my sillyness of dealing with a bad break up with the girlfriend I had at that time, lost that job at FPS due to being late as I dived into gaming and didnt care about being late or anything really.

I then went full time at a job I started to do part time in December of that year. A food service company that provided for the major airport in my state (no pics as I hated that job so never bothered taking any hehe). I worked that food job for just over 2 years (brings me to 22), then got fired from that job due to being late (yeah I had a late problem but didnt care for the job so didnt care about being on time haha).

I was without a job for a few months then found the job Im currently working at hehe. I've now almost been at my current job for about a year (time to change :p).

With the help of a family member involved in law enforcement (not a police officer though), Im hoping to finally get a police officer job this summer. If not I plan of transfering to another state through my current security company and work on being a police officer in another state thats warmer year round. Im thinking of Virginia about 9 hours south of my current state. Its amazing how much warmer 9 hours south is hehe. So that concludes my work story :p, even though I enjoy warmer temps during the winter if I can get the summer police job here I will stay in my current state for a few more years before moving. But either way I definitly want to move south lol.

Nice to hear what those that have posted so far do in the real world. Maybe we can hear from the thread starter *cough* Matt *cough* hehe. Thanks all that have shared so far hope to hear from the rest of the crew :D

LOL Mike. Sure, ill share my role.

- What you currently do?

I am currently Service Manager at one of three Homebase stores in my city. I work full time contracted to a minimum of 39hrs, on average working 45-50hrs a week.

- If you like it?

I currently enjoy my role but have heavy pressures & stressful working weeks with strict timescales & demands. The salary is good, but for the hours I work probably competitive, not fantastic for the responsibilities & role expectations. Everyday is full of different scenarios & made up of variety. This makes it consistently interesting yet demanding.

- If you will persue it?

Definately. I started as a part time cashier back when I was at college. Then I was promoted to supervisor and eventually offered my current position early last year. My aim is to get to Store Manager before im 26.

- What company you work for?

Homebase Ltd is the second largest UK DIY & home improvement retailler. The company has over 300 stores over the UK & Ireland. Homebase is part of a group known as Home Retail Group which consists of Homebase (www.homebase.co.uk), Argos (www.argos.co.uk), & HomeStore&More. Argos is the number one furniture & toy retailler in the UK providing virtually everything from Xbox 360s to Garden Digging Spades to childrens toys to jewelery.

Homebase has a ranking structure as follows in all 300+ stores.

http://www.sog-team.com/gallery/images/539/1_3.jpg

My role directly reports to the Store Manager and works alongside the Sales Manager.

- What is the nature of business?

My role involves managing my team to maintain customer service standards in relation to hygiene & housekeeping in addition to replenishment / striving for high availiability.
I have a team of 21 with 47 employed at my store. My departments I run are the Garden Centre, Sales Floor & Replenishment Teams. My opposite number the Sales Manager runs two departments being the tills aka front end & showroom. The Sales Manager acts as deputy in the store managers absence making my role no3.

- Discuss your previous jobs?

My only other job was working at a haulage company. I was the "maintenance" man who looked after the premises & helped maintain / service the lorries.

I will post some pictures of me currently at work in Homebase shortly.

- What you currently do?
As little as I can get away with. ;) If only that where true!! I'm a propman for film and TV. This is a fairly difficult job to describe, as it changes day to day. The basics are....

Dressing Props: Basically overpaid furniture removal man. Pick up props from suppliers, take to prop store or location to be used. Dress the set with said props, and when filming is over, take them back to the propstore/ supplier. This obviously involves a fair amount of paperwork to check items in and out of the store/supplier, as we would get billed for any loss or damage incurred.

Stand-By Props: Travelling with the film crew, and taking care of the set while the filming occurs. This usually involves moving furniture (again!!) to accomodate camera, actors, effect, etc, and includes photographing the positions of everything to be moved in order that it can be re-set to it's origional position for further shots. Stand-by Props also includes the care of 'action props' which is basically anything the actors interact with that is script driven, like for example a vial of deadly poison, a folder of secret files, or even just a cup of tea. ;) This also involves 'breaking down' the script to ensure you have all the things that no one else will think of for any given scene.

Prop master: Overseeing the entire props department. Far more paperwork than the other jobs, and not my favourite.

Prop Maker: Well, it kinda describes itself doesn't it?

- If you like it?
It has it's good days and bad days like any other job, but yes I like it.

- If you will persue it?
Can't see me changing now, too bloody old!! :p

- What company you work for?
I'm freelance/self employed, so basically whichever company sub contracts me.

- What is the nature of business?
Entertainment.

- Discuss your previous jobs?
Worked in a pizza shop while I was at college, and on a bread van when I was at school.

- What you currently do?
Work for a "Relations Management" group. Aka Call center company that has quite a few clients. I work for one of the biggest/well known companies in the US at this time. They've been around for a while.

- If you like it?
Sure, I like to help people and get to some type of resolution for their issues. At this time I deal with everything from adding upgrades to account, like another TV package, to faster internet, etc. As well as troubleshooting their issue(s) from "this remote doesn't work" to "I already did this with the last person!" haha :p

So with that said with any customer service type job there are going to be those days you just wish that:
They forget the number to dial
They decide not to call in because they are tired
They call and get someone else and you never have to deal with them :p

Oh and I've worked here since April 2007, this is the 2nd project/client I've worked for in this time. I just recently in the middle of January started to work at home on a split shift, so if there is bad weather out I don't have to worry about leaving early for work. Not complaining so far. :D

- If you will persue it?
Most likely not, it's not my goal. I want to get in the IT industry, something like a helpdesk that fixes PCs, educates people why that button is not a toy, and why the CDROM drive is not a cup holder... :lol2:

I'm actually considering going back for my bachelors degree in IT (Information Technology), have a few options in mind. Will most likely start this soon. Also still looking for another job that might help open the door to my career as well.

- What company you work for?
Well if you really want to know, Convergys (http://convergys.com/company/company-overview.php) is the name of the company. They have centers every where.

- What is the nature of business?
Customer Service, HR Relations, maybe a few others...

- Discuss your previous jobs?
The job before this one, from 2005-2007 when in college, I worked at a catering company in downtown St Louis, not too far from where I lived at the time. I did everything from tell people where to park, to serve food during the correct times. It was a pretty decent job for part time, usually worked about 2-3 days a week, when i did work it was usually close to a 10hr day which would go by fast. Oh and not to mention most parties had nice looking women... haha.. oh.. :D

Hopefully I get that promotion next week. It would feel like a huge victory being manager with 23, and I can lower my head to the lower levels of employees to find Matt down there, hehehe. :D

No Mike, I meant the project I'm on now. I take calls for ATT at the moment. What I meant.
