TIPS & TRICKS FOR INFANTRY ONLY
1. Ingame Settings & Controls :
The first thing that you will have to edit if you haven't already is ingame settings and controls.
Turn off those crappy shadows and the lighting. You will be able to see enemies much better.
You might also want to change some stuff down to increase your fps. Better performance = more frags.
Then you will have to edit your controls to be comfortable and so that you can do everything very fast.
Heres an example of how my controls look like :
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/BOURNEUK/group1xj9.png
I can access everything very quick and I'm very comfortable with this control setting.
I can prone spam stand up again switch weapons throw med packs etc in very little time. If you get fast enough you will get a lot of macro accusations ,of course a macro will never be able doing all this so fast.
Also the mouse and keyboard is very important too.
I don't think a gaming keyboard is a must. Just buy one you are comfortable with.
But the mouse is another story. If you don't have a gaming mouse. I highly recommend it. You will see a lot of improvements in your aiming.
I can recommend you the Logitech G5. Best gaming mouse out there
2. Practicing :
Yeah thats right. You will never learn playing good on public servers against noobs.
If you are in a clan use every opportunity for a clan match.
Or go on some waib server or gather.
(In case you don't know what this is go either on http://www.esl.eu to play gathers or type "waib" in your server browser to play an unranked public style match against more skilled players)
See how those good players play and learn from them.
You can even watch some frag movies from good players. It helps too
3. What Kit to Use? :
Just use what you like most. But the most powerful kit on I/O is Medic
and thats the main kit you should be using if want to perform good.
You can heal yourself at anytime, can revive and also have a very good rifle along with your
nades to keep you alive
4. Using Grenades :
Nades are the second most important weapon in this game next to your rifle. Use them wisely and strategic. Don't just spam them like a total noob, you will not have any when you are going to need them.(unless you are support of course. Then spam them as much as you want ) There are 2 ways to throw nades in BF2 one with left click and the other one with right click.
With left click it just throws them in the way we all know. The tricky part is right click. You can charge and throw the nade with as much power as you want. If you press right click once very quick it will throw the nade right at your feet.(A good trick is when you have someone chasing you. You can throw the nade like this way and keep running. When he comes after you the nade will probably kill him)
You can also charge it up halfway and throw the nade over small walls. Jumping forward while throwing nades should increase throwing distance.
5. Med packs :
Spam them all around the place so you can always get healed fast when you need to.
I also tend to throw some at the way i will follow if I'm in trouble. So if i have to leave and get shot while at it i still can heal myself pretty fast.
6. Taking Cover :
Most people I see on public servers just run around in wide open areas and going into firefights like they are Rambo. You will not survive on BF2 if you play like that.
Taking cover is very important. Use everything you can as cover. I even use supply boxes sometimes because the noobs don't know you can shoot through them.
Pop up and down behind your cover using crouch or prone and shoot bursts.
Always run near walls or cover and don't go into the open unless you know its perfectly safe.
You need to be taking cover all the time and even if you are running somewhere always try to be near cover if you start getting shot.
7. Knowing where the Enemy is :
You will need to know where the enemy is and surprise them. Always take a look at your UAV. .Enemies your commander or your teammates spot.
You can also figure out that there are enemies somewhere by watching flags going down and how fast they goes down. Faster means more enemies of course or by watching the icons that indicate that there is a dead teammate. This means that someone got killed there and the enemy is still around.
Listen to sounds. You can hear your enemies behind corners sometimes.(i know many people who listen to music while playing. bad idea)
There are also ways to tweak your sounds so you can hear your enemies better. You can also use your teammates to see if there is an enemy in the location your teammate it going. I always do this. I watch a player from my team, memorize his name and if i see he die in the way he was going then i will know that there is enemies around.
8. Knowing where the Enemy went :
Many times you will see someone running away from you
If you do spot him before you loose him from sight so you know exactly where he went. So you can either follow him(bad idea if he is a sniper) or take an other way and surprise him.
9. Moving Around :
Move around smart and don't use the ways everyone goes.Try to surprise your enemy. Don't stay in the same place for a long time to enjoy the view, its a war game and you can get a bullet in the head anytime.
Move around all the time and never go Instant prone like most public players do. You will just be an easy steady target. Its very important. Bunny hopping, Prone spamming and Dolphin diving. DO IT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. . Bunny hopping is not illegal and its not an exploit. If you don't use everything you can to avoid dying then your going to get owned really bad in BF2. If you wish to stay with your feet on the ground. Your free to do it and be an easy target for us
10. Hunting a more skilled player :
Of course you will have to deal with some more skilled players sometimes too. Use all those techniques you know and try to be smarter than your enemy. If you are playing against a skilled player he will see how you play and use it against you, so try to outsmart him.
You will also see that better players aren't much where everybody is. But they take different routes and stay away from the crowd.
11. Killing someone behind cover :
If you see a player behind cover who's popping up to shoot and then going back into cover. Then he definitely has an advantage over you but you still have chances to kill him. Try shooting before you think hes going to pop and so that the moment he gets up to shoot you all your bullets go into his face.
12. Falling Back :
Falling Back is very important too. You need to know when you cant handle any more enemies and that you need to fall back. Try to find a better spot where you can finish off the remaining guys. And always think of where you would go to fall back when things get difficult.
13. Switching Kits :
Out of ammo and there is a kit lying around? Pick it up and if your lucky it will still have ammo in it so you can finish off your enemy. Or for example if you find a sniper kit you can pick his kit up and use those claymores. I always like putting clays around of the sniper i just killed. And when he comes back for me he gets blown up by his own clays
I also always pick up medic kits to revive my teammates.
14. Surviving Nades :
Nades are getting spammed pretty much in BF2 so you need to find way of avoiding them.I f you see someone throwing nades at you. Never run back from where you came from unless there is a safe way and you have cover. Its like walking in the exact same location the nade will go. Always try to go sideways or run directly to your enemy. Most of these people will hop around and throw nades at you making them an easy kill.
Did you knew that you can survive from a nade exploding right next to you?
The trick to this is putting your head into a wall. How to do it? Simply prone facing the wall and start moving forward until you cant move anymore. Then your heads hit-box will be in the wall and you will not get the triple damage anymore so you will get away with half of your life.
If you throw some med packs too you will be instant healed and can survive a few nades without dying.
Practice this and you will see that when you get used to and can do it very fast it can save your ass many times.
15. Fast Shock paddle Recharge :
Yes you can revive people without having to reload your shock paddles.
Its very simple! Just change to anything else. Your gun for example and switch back to your Shock paddles very fast. Then they will be Recharged. Sometimes you will see the reloading animation but reviving will still work.
16. Shooting while reloading :
Ever reloaded your weapon and an enemy appeared right in front of you? Yes you have a chance to shoot him if you still have bullets left in your gun. This work like the Fast Shock paddle Recharge. Quickly switch to pistol or something else and switch back to your rifle very quick. You can start shooting now. You will see the reloading animation but your gun will actually be shooting. Looks kinda strange but it does the job.
After the gun empties you will have full ammo again after the reloading finished. This trick has saved my ass many times. It can save yours too. Just Practice a bit and you will see.
17. Shooting through stuff :
Many of you will probably know this already but ill write it down anyway. Yes there are some thing in BF2 that you can actually shoot through.
You can shoot through supply boxes and that thin metal fences like on karkand.
Can be very useful sometimes.
Tip : On Karkand on this type of fence on the right side of hotel. You can jump and see if someone is behind it. Try to shoot him. You never know you might get lucky and get a kill.
18. Reviving someone who is "hanging" :
Sometimes people dead half in the wall or are hanging at strange places so they cant be revived.
If you throw a med pack on the dead guys he will bounce away most of the times. Throw one or two before reviving and try again. But hurry up, you have less than 15 seconds.
19. Using Ladders :
I have seen many people that don't know trick already too.
You can slide down ladders on BF2 very fast by holding down "Shift" so you don't go down for ages & you can change to third person camera by pressing "C". This is very useful for seeing if there is a claymore on top of the ladder.
20. Full Ammo Kit & Kit Swapping with reviving :
There is a bug in BF2 so that if you revive someone really fast after they died they get a full ammo kit. I think this has happened to many of you already that you got revived really fast and your kit had full ammo again. You can also switch kits this way. If you select a new kit before dying and get revived really fast you will have your new kit then.
I also use this technique with my clan mates when there is no support near. Just team kill them and revive really fast. Then they have a new kit or full ammo on the current one.
21. Knowing where the enemy is shooting from :
I still see many people on the battlefield hopping around and trying to figure out from where they are getting shot from. This little indicator exists on all fps i have played and it should exist in almost all fps around. Its very useful when you are getting shot you will know exactly where to search for enemy.
There is a circle like you can see on the screen-shot which cant be seen. Only a part of it comes up when your getting shot. Heres an example in the screen-shot to help you understand :
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s258/BOURNEUK/gettingshotlp1.jpg
You will NOT see the full circle just the full red part and this will mean that you are getting damage from this direction.
22. Spotting :
This works really great along with the above. If you got shot from a sniper for example and you cant see him. Just make a few random spots on the area you got shot from and it will say "Enemy Sniper" most of the times.
You can also see a lot of spotting in many pro frag movies. Spotting the area you think enemies are coming can be very useful. You can also spot over those small walls if you think someone is behind there. Not always but someone you get an enemy spotted.
Spotting enemies before you loose them from sight can help you very much too. Because like said in Section 4. you will know exactly where they have gone.
23. Jump shots :
Shooting while jumping has been removed after some patch.(1.3 i think)
But not completely. You can still shoot but ONLY on your way down from the jump. I think this can be seen in many sniper videos but it also works with assault rifles. You can try it by jumping down from a small roof and shooting while going down.
Or jump to see over some small wall or something and shoot while going down. You can get a kill this way.
24. Reviving :
First of all, Always try killing the enemies before reviving!
All those stupid medics i see around they all go prone when reviving. DON'T always revive by going prone. Yes sometimes it is needed but doing it every time you revive is a bad idea. If an enemy is around and you are reviving your teammate by going prone then he will have a perfectly lined up shot on you both. And you will die most of the times. You and the person you just revived.
But if you revive someone by crouching then the enemy will have a hard time killing you both fast. And as most people tend to shoot the guy you just revived first you can easily shoot the guy down then.
A better idea would be not stop moving at all when your reviving. Try running over your target and right half a meter before the dead body click on revive so when your right over it you should get the revive and continue moving. Its a bit tricky but once you get used to it its very useful.
Who to revive first? :
Your first target to revive should always be your squad leader. But if theres no squad leader around and you just want to revive a bunch guys. Try always reviving the guy who died first(if you know it) so that you can revive all of them before time runs out.
25. Team play :
You should always try being in a squad and working as a team .Or even if you prefer playing alone, then always stick around the team and around the medics, so when you time you will have more chances getting revived.
26. Zooming in/Using Iron Sights :
I see many people that are zooming in every time they see an enemy. This is a big mistake, you should be shooting unzoomed most of the time.
You cross hairs are very accurate when you get used to it. And the cross hair is identical on every weapon so you don't need to center your target another way with every different gun. And when you zoom in & out there is a delay. You could shoot an enemy much faster without zooming in. And also when you zoom in and go to prone, then when you want to stand up again quick(for example if you have a nade landed right next to you) you wont be able to do it fast enough to get out of the situation.
The only times you should zoom in is on targets that are more than 50 game meters away. Or when your gun starts building up too much deviation and the bullets don't hit anything.
Remember that there is almost no difference in accuracy when zoomed in or not.
27. What does the Red Skull & Crossbones mean? :
The Red Skull & Crossbones on the right side of your HUD mean that there is a mine or claymore is nearby.
So open your eyes and watch out.
And don't punish if its from some of your teammates. Its not his fault you where stupid enough to not see them.
28. Killing a Bunny hopper :
This one is pretty simple. You should not be afraid of shooting a bunny hopper or wait till they land. Just try to shoot exactly where they will land(before they land) and once you get used to it you will see that its pretty easy.
29. Many Enemies? Who to shoot first? :
There will be situations where you have to deal with more than one enemy. And you might ask yourself. Who to kill first now? You should always try shooting the guy who is more near to you. Because he has a much more clear sight on you and so he is the one that will kill you easier most of the times. Even if you are shooting another guy already and someone appears near you, take cover and start shooting him instead.
You should put your targets in different classes like who is the most lethal, the least lethal etc.
Always try shooting the medics down first so reviving his teammates is not a problem for you anymore.
And always try to shoot those snipers at last. Most of them are the least lethal on close combat and cant shoot you down.
And use your grenades. With throwing one or two nades in the right spot and finishing off the rest you can take whole squads by yourself.
Frag Vids : Cool
Here are some frag vids from good players so you can see how they play and learn from it, I certainly did ;)

And always try to shoot those snipers at last. Most of them are the least lethal on close combat and cant shoot you down.
And use your grenades. With throwing one or two nades in the right spot and finishing off the rest you can take whole squads by yourself.
