hey guys i have been doin some work on my works autcion site and noticed a cool wee feature they have when posting an item.

When putting a link in it gives you an option to either open in the same window or new window and also allows hover text boxes to appear with whatever text you want
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/8088/linksuggest2be0.bmphttp://img25.imageshack.us/img25/7473/linksuggest1oq3.bmp
just wondered if maybe its something we may be able to get if poss :)

Well thats just to make text a clickable link and yeah i know thats there. :)
But can we get the wee text popups that appear when you hover over a link like in Nico's sig.(sorry Nico) i think he put it in with html which i know is not allowed for less than (GL) but if we were to do it like the way my works site do it with an option on the link entry window then gl lowers would still no be allowed to enter hmtl. if you know what i mean :s;)

ah you want on mouse-over pop-up?....

i'd said nope as i dont have time to click or watch whats showing when im moving the mouse - want to add link or info do it in normal way... for me

but ask Wes or Matt...

sry but for me its useless and its gonna make the forums and posts not readable - spoils, popups, on mouse-over, not on mouse-over, java, html, bbcode ...... well forums/posts should be easy to read not to think what is on the author's mind and where i should looking for what - thats mine private opinion

well i was just thinking for things like intro etc were we could have a pop up to make sure they know the link ids to read rules etc. ie "click here for all sites rules" pops up when you hover over the text link rules. if you see my point just an extra wee reminder i tink about what the link is and the fact that it is even a link. :) but yeah if it is lots of code for something so small then nps just thot it may help some people get the point across. :)

i think that would be called a URL description... and it's not really nessesary, we invented the () for that...

You're misunderstanding each other guys. :) (Not all of you)

What's in my signature isn't a pop-up window, it's what's known as ALT or "Alternate". It's a text that will display incase an image doesn't display, but it will also display in a tooltip balloon when hovering the image when it's there. :)

I don't know if HTML is only allowed for GLs though, to be honest. I never tried it untill Pepper made his userbars, and I wanted to credit him for it.

As for using it with links, it is possible yes. But it requies HTML to be enabled in posts, and that will enable spam bots or evilminded registered users to do lots of stuff that might potentially harm you guys reading the posts. For instance, we all know that some sites attempt to send spyware to your PC. If we enable HTML on the forums, then technically it would be possible to embed an entire webpage in a post, and also to make it send spyware. It would also be possible to draw information through it and in general it would be a huge downfall in security on our site. This is also why HTML in general is disabled on most webmail accounts - it leads to abuse sadly.

It might be possible in other ways though, like enabling a special BB tag to wrap around HTML that would only accept some HTML promts, like links and colour, etc, and thus maintain security of the site. :)

As for titled links, you can make those as Deka pointed out. :)

yeah thats what i mean "tooltips" sorry as you say bit of misunderstanding. i never really meant titled links i meant tooltips for links :) but as you say nico if it would leave the site open to attacks so to speak then forget it. i just thot i would be a nice addition to the options in the post window.

That is a good idea, however, on the main forums page that is what the "Description" section is for. However, I think we could have a embedded popup come up when you signin, like the one that says "You are unregistered" but instead something that says "Read our Rules Here" every so often so that players, are better informed.

What do you think?

Tyrope

TC, with all due respect...

what are you talking about?!

Nicoleise
16-02-09, 06:12 PM
We're talking past each other still :p

What TC is referring to is that on the main index page of the forums, all the forums are listed with a description, e.g. for Members Only it looks like this :

Members Only
Private forum for |SOG| members with no public viewing

The gray section would be the description ;)

And then suggesting something similar to the pop up that appears if you don't log in to the site, that shows to remind newcomers to read the rules ;)

However, original idea was to add tooltips to links. Very drifty topic this :D

DeKA
16-02-09, 06:18 PM
well more pop-ups = slowest site... and nobody is reading them anyway :p

and tbh i usually block all -removed- pop-ups on every site and i really dont want to have to do it also here at SOG .....

alt text for images or even links is easy to complement but same i dont see the need for it ....

I think it's a bad idea:

1. Using HTML in post can cause crashes on the site when the HTML posted is corupted and if there's a bot comming in who can post he can post things where your pc can get corupted from.

2. Making pop ups can indeed slow down the site also most browsers block pop ups, i think it's just as easy to press the link then to let a pop up go over it.

3. Everytime you mvoe your mouse over it the pop up always comes up, for me that's really anoying, tales you longer to go to all the posts because you have to be carefull where you go over it.

Ok so from the general concensus this is a bad idea. so ill just take it as a no then

cheers for the thots tho guys :)

 I guess that settles that then ;)

Nice idea though X :)

well hold on... what about the same kind of thing that pop's up allready for new PM's?

That gives you the option and i doubt it would slow the site atall...

Wes
12-03-09, 06:50 PM
it's a pop up ...

Some browsers block it anyway ...

XmarksTheScot

Anyway my original request was for the wee mouse hoover pop windowy things. think they are called tooltips or balloon popups. so the pop up idea is totally the wrong thing mate.

Ie if you hoover over the last post title in the main froums index a wee popup/tooltip comes up saying "Got to first unread post in.." thats what i mean. it was to see if we can add those to links in a post.

But as Wes and Nico have both explained this would req HTML permissons for none higher members which would leave the site more open to unwanted scripts and stuff like that being put in spam/malicous posts

So altho it may have been a good idea it was not do-able for security reasons :)

Tim

Right, and btw, the "pop-up" I was referring to is Php coding I think, and not a "pop-up" technically, as it's embedded into the site so a pop-up blocker shouldn't keep it from showing to my knowledge.

Also, the links should have a tool-tip/description that come up after hovering over it anyway. Shows a certain part of the txt in the thread's first post. Not sure what you was referring to for sure....

Oh and I don't have HTML option, so can't be used...

Well i was originally wondering if it would be possible for us to be able to create these tooltips for links that we post in threads etc

But see reasons above for answers why not :)

I could look into a javascript hover pop up which is often easier, however im very confused with the thread. Is this something the concensus is to neglect? What limitations would such a link have?

Oh ok... Matt I don't think there has to be too many characters shown, just enough for a description of the site...

I think this can be done, however, as far as I'm seeing it may require some sort of coding to make it work without giving the user HTML code access.

XmarksTheScot

ok to clarify all this (maybe its my mental Scottish way of putting things) all i was asking was for "hover over" tooltips for the url links in post. or rather the ability of members to create these to make links in posts more noticeable. As to the limits etc i guess it would only need to be about 25 or so characters just to say something like "click here for more info" or smth.

Tim
14-03-09, 10:24 PM
I get what you are saying, like in the news section where the bot posts news right?

Nicoleise
16-03-09, 04:17 PM
Yes, excactly like those pop-up tool tips that pop up (not just there, but in any forum thread), when you hover the title of a thread, and it shows the first part of the first post in this tooltip bubble.

The same principle as that, but with use in an actual post, e.g. the text "This link will add me as your friend on xFire" could appear in a tooltip bubble if someone were to hover this in-post link :

I'm on xFire (xfire:add_friend?user=nicoleise)

As previously stated it is commonly achieved using the "ALT(ernate)" feature of HTML, that indicates what else to show, if a given object cannot be displayed. It was mostly used during early days of browsing. As an example, you'd insert an image of a cat, but you'd want to make sure that even those using a browser that could not display the image, would know what it was - hence ;

<img src="cat.bmp" alt="An image of a cat"</img> (I'm not sure if that's the accurate code)

If a person couldn't see the image, instead there'd be a text line stating "An image of a cat" where the image should have been.
The same parameter is also used to generate the hover tooltips on links and images, so if we use the above example again, and pretend that the cat image DID show, then if I were to hover my mouse over it, a tool tip would appear, reading "An image of a cat". Hence it's often used on sites for things like "Click here to Enter" or "Click here to proceed"

This enquiry goes on obtaining the excact same thing, only for use in regular posts. However, as said, I'm personally somewhat against allowing HTML for the purpose, but something like JavaScript, that Matt mentions, will do the job fine, and will be safe as well.

ill repeat myself - it could be done with BBCode - there is no need to turn on html for "ALT=" text

if Wes would be so kind he can make it .....

Wes
16-03-09, 05:03 PM
something like this:

www.sog-team.co.uk

www.sog-team.co.uk

it's the only thing that could work in bb code, if youwant more you just have to wait unthil matt can make one in java ...

Og yeah i can change the click here in whatever you want ...

XmarksTheScot
16-03-09, 07:08 PM
Woooohooo i think we finally all understand and we have it sorted

so it would be something like this:

img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/mahswh/thank_you_so_much.gif

DeKA
16-03-09, 07:31 PM
lol i was thinking you want smoething like that

{url}

or

{url}

Tim
16-03-09, 10:30 PM
That's it, I searched but couldn't find anything for BB Code, maybe I searched for the wrong thing lol....

DeKA
17-03-09, 12:53 AM
i found the code for that and thought i saved it but it looks like i have not :s

will try to search again

XmarksTheScot
17-03-09, 01:25 AM
So now if we can find some bb code where we can get it to say whatever we want instead of the "click here" and still have the hover over tooltip. but not use html then we would have it all :)

BTW Thanks to every1 for the replies and help and searching so far :D

Nicoleise
18-03-09, 04:31 PM
That's the puuurrrfect solution, Wes (&Deka) :)

Thanks

One can be made with ease using JS too. I am currently using one in the report database.
